Many at times people tend to take advantage of others misfortune to enrich themselves. Whenever I hear of someone referring to himself as a philanthropist, I occasionally take a moment to review their deeds. Are they really doing it for the world to see them or because they are touched with your dis-heartening situation?
One guy who has thrived on pocketing media to do public relations articles to cover his filthy image is one, Mr Joe Kariuki. Having been introduced to him through the online networks, I did thorough research to find out why a man who claims to be doing numerous charity initiatives nationally and globally would fail to be recognized by top world organisations. Later I came to notice, the guy’s ways are not as straight-forward as he tries to make them look.
Having worked with him for sometime, I noticed a couple of ghost projects launched under his watch. Through his foundations African Women and Beyond, Candy n Candy records and Vibe City, he has thrived on duping many naive Kenyans.
In April-May 2016, through African Women and Beyond, the organisation posted a call of recruiting and empowering vulnerable women from Kisumu and its neighbouring environs. Amsha Mama Kisumu edition was to boost business for women who were already acquitted to their work. The event was to happen at Jomo Kenyatta Sports Ground, on 4th June but on the fateful night of 3rd June, Joe Kariuki together with his crew travalled back to Nairobi without any notice to the stranded Kisumu Community. They eloped with the data and personal details of over 150 women from different parts of Kisumu county who had enrolled for the event. 2 women who were to get special treat at Imperial Hotel were neither attended to. On the poster for the event, the firm used pictures of Nyota Ndoto, Ng’ang’alito, Vivian Kenya, Shaniqwa, Susumila and Mercy Masika as artists who would perform for Amsha Mama Kisumu concert, yet none of them had consented to work with them.
In June 2016, African Women and Beyond together with Amsha Mama came up with an initiative dubbed Pedal Against Poverty. The event aimed to end poverty in all its form, end hunger, achieve food security and reduce inequality within countries. On the Facebook pages, Amsha Mama was to donate ksh100 to Pedal Against Poverty for each post shared on their page between 20th June and 20th August. The event was cancelled one week prior, despite the organizers receiving funding from USA embassy and getting over ksh 300,000 from the Facebook shares.
On September 2016, Through one of Joe Kariuki’s organisations, Candy n Candy records the company duped Kisumu artists and corporates that they were to hold an award event in the city on 1st October, dubbed Vibe City Kisumu. Despite using the creatives images to outsource funds, the event was cancelled the moment October ticked in. No communication was however made to the nominees.
In short, once bitten twice shy. This man Joe Kariuki is a guy who enriches himself by seeking donor funds to launch non-existent ghost projects. Next time you see him in your county posing such moves, run. These are just but a few of the fake projects by the self-proclaimed millionaire, there are a lot more.
