I have been trying to find a perfect ,captivating opening write up to this confession. 3 years ago , I had serious pressure , I have a set of friends who only talk books. If you ain’t a reader then you ain’t fitting in. And what’s wrong with that? Someone would ask.

It was so hard for me to be a reader …now that’s what’s wrong! I just undressed right there! A couple of us were raised reading (mostly my white friends ) my other African friends who went to my kinda foundational schools find it unnatural . That’s the absolute truth!
WE STRUGGLE WITH FALLING IN LOVE WITH THE BOOK!

Its not because Africans we are not smart, we are the smartest thing walking the face of the earth, we are passionate ,we are resilient, we love what adds value, and we have brains the size of an elephant . How do I know, I am one. But, loving books is just not how we are raised.
I know that sounds like putting the blame on our parents but heck my idea of paying my own bills came from living with a single mom so I guess its right to say parents shape who we turn out to be.
Now, THIS IS A SERIOUS CONCERN BECAUSE THE WORLD NOW IS ABOUT KNOWING MORE THAN OTHERS .

AFRICA WILL NEED TO READ TO BE COMPETITIVE. Reading in Africa is a sad affair, reading was like a punishment growing up, when you did something wrong you were brutally spanked then asked to go inside and read. We hated reading , we could not wait for the day we would grow up and not have to read. An African child is not enticed to read.

I remember being in a plane from Vancouver to Stockholm and a couple in front of me had a 9 months old baby on board and they would read to the baby, taking turns ,I was like, ” what the heck”..it was my first time seeing that. And I knew where this reading drive of my other race friends comes from. It is built from early.

HOWEVER, from two years ago I just sat myself down in a one person meeting and looked at the pros and cons. The pros of reading are More than cons of our foundational upbringing . SO I TOLD MYSELF TO FORCE MYSELF TO LOVE READING.
READING IS THE HEART OF LIFE SINCE 20TH CENTURY. I promise you if you don’t read you will be left behind. Life now is so competitive, more knowledge gives you more power. FORCE YOURSELF TO READ!!!

It will be unsweet , will be boring, a total struggle but you either force yourself now than start when you are 40 unless you want to stay mediocre till you die. Start small, you can start by just two chapter of a book a day or twice a week and the addiction will grow. Just never be ashamed to say it’s a struggle , when you own a problem it helps you see clearly and plan better. Just start reading, you’ll fall in love later
